Position Overview
The Water/Wastewater Operator Trainee assists with the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the City’s treatment systems under the supervision of certified professionals and a contracted Operator in Responsible Charge (DRC). This hands-on position supports essential services that ensure safe drinking water and proper wastewater treatment.

The Role

  • Assist with daily operation and monitoring of treatment facilities
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on equipment and systems
  • Collect samples and support regulatory testing and reporting
  • Respond to system alerts and participate in on-call rotation
  • Help maintain water, sewer, and public works infrastructure

What You’ll Learn

  • Mechanical, electrical, and troubleshooting skills
  • Skills needed to become a certified operator

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work outdoors and respond to emergencies
  • Experience preferred, not required

Certification Requirements

  • Obtain Water and Wastewater Treatment OIT certification within 12 months of hire
  • Achieve required Water Treatment Grade 1 and Wastewater Treatment Grade 2 certifications within the timeframes established by the City and permitted by applicable State education and experience requirements.
